Welcome to Horse and Buggy! We hope your experience with us is fun, flavorable, and fantastic. If it's ever anything but that, please let us know immediately, and we'll do our best to make it right.

How it works

Most of the foods we offer come to you as "shares". For example, you can sign up to receive a produce share, a trout share, an egg share, a granola share, . . . you get the idea. Each type of share is available in a variety of sizes, so you can choose what's most appropriate for the number of mouths you'll be feeding. You could get a big produce share, a large chicken share, a medium egg share, a mini pork share, and a small bread share, for example.

When you sign up for a share, you're signing up for a subscription for that item.

In other words, you sign up to receive your share(s) for the 8-month season, and pay for your subscription in 8 monthly installments.

Commitment phobic, or just out of town now and then? Don't freak out, because you can upgrade, downgrade, modify, interrupt, cancel, or begin your subscription(s) at anytime. No commitment is necessary. Just give us a week's notice, and we'll take it from there.

To further ease your mind, you can sample most of our share items by signing up for a one-time delivery. Although, don't blame us if you get hooked on everything we offer.

The easiest way to become a subscriber is through our secure Online Market using your debit or credit card. However, if you want to pay by check or cash (they still make cash, don't they?!), want some help placing your order, or just need some assistance figuring out what size share(s) you should get, we're here to help. Just email us at office@horseandbuggyproduce.com or call our office at (434) 293-3832, and someone will be glad to give you a hand.

Remember, it's never too late to join or add a new subscription to your order, and you can cancel or interrupt your share(s) at any time with as little as one week's notice.

Produce share menus

Each week we create share menus comprised of the freshest, in-season produce. Share menus may be different from location to location, or even between Family and Couples Shares at the same drop spot, because shares are based on a specific dollar value and because there are limited amounts of certain crops. This is especially true early in the season when the bounty is less plentiful.

Share menus will be based on an average cost over the season, so you will experience a "bell-curve" of produce as the season progresses. Remember, you are subscribing to a garden and when the harvest surges, you will feel that surge - bring on the tomatoes, and the cantaloupe, and the corn, and the green beans, and the peaches, and the berries, and the . . . you get the idea!

How to collect your food

Each time you arrive at your pick-up location, you'll see Produce Share tables, as well as a bunch of A La Carte tables where you pick up your meat, poultry, trout, egg, bread, granola, and cheese shares.

It's fun gathering a Produce Share, and it only takes a few minutes to complete. The individual items comprising your share will be displayed in separate baskets, crates, or boxes with signs indicating how much of each item to take. Scales are available when appropriate. You just go down the line, and collect all your goodies.

However, if you're usually pressed for time, we offer pre-boxed produce shares as well.

Also, if you get something you're not crazy about, visit our "Swap Table". There you can leave your less-than-favorites for fellow subscribers, and collect your great loves left behind by those who donﾂ稚 share your enthusiasm. And if you can't find a suitable substitute at the Swap Table, come to the A La Carte Table for a dollar-equivalent substitution or a la carte credit. (Limit: one item per week, please.)

Our offerings change frequently, due to the advancing season and the many farmers that grow for us. That means lots of variety. Typically, you'll see items for about two or three consecutive weeks, and then a whole new wave of harvested goodies will come your way.

Each delivery, your share will usually include one or two types of fruit.

Lastly, there will always be a huge variety of a la carte items available to supplement your subscription. We suggest you bring several sturdy bags and egg cartons to carry all of your fresh food home.
